FYA Newsletters Spring

Happy Spring!!!

As we approach the end of this academic year (your first year!) we wanted to take this opportunity to go over a few important items.

Did you know that you are expected to have a proposed major and have met with a college adviser by end of your first year? You can see your current proposed major in your Student Portal, in My Student Center, Student Advising Summary, Career/Program/Plan tab. If you need to update your proposed major, please reply back to this email so that one of the Stevenson advisers can update your record. If you have not yet met with one of us in the Stevenson advising office, please make an appointment by calling the college office at 831-459-4930 so that we can go over your academic progress.

Priority enrollment for fall quarter will begin on May 14. Please check your student portal for your enrollment appointment time. Your fall course selection should reflect either your declared or proposed major. (For some majors it is vital that you get started early with the major requirements so that you have enough time to fulfill your major requirements by your expected graduation term.) To learn about major requirements, please visit the major advisers, refer to the General Catalog or see their department website.

To help students prepare for fall enrollment and discuss potential major choices, Stevenson Advising will be hosting "Advising in the Quad" May 9 (upper quad) and May 10 (lower quad.) Advisers will be available from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. for general academic advising, to clarify any of the graduation requirements listed below and to help point you in the right direction. Come by and get those questions answered along with some free candy!

Hopefully by now, you have accessed your student portal to monitor your academic progress and the graduation requirements. To review, all of the following must be met in order for you to graduate:

  • Major requirements (check with your major/program advisers)
  • University requirements (Entry Level Writing Requirement and American History & Institutions)
  • College requirement (core course)
  • General Education requirements
  • Credit requirement (180 credits)
  • GPA requirement (2.0 cumulative, includes grades earned from other UC campuses)
  • P/NP percentage limit (25% or below from overall UCSC earned credits)
  • Senior residency requirement (35 out of your last 45 credits taken at UCSC)

Lastly, the Stevenson Advising Office would like to extend our appreciation for allowing us to be partners in your education. We strive to assist you in bridging the gap between your taking ownership of your academic career and the bureaucracy of a large institution. And in order to better serve you in the future, we would like to pose this one question, What do you know NOW that you wish you had known at the beginning of the academic year (F’11)? If you could reply back to this e-mail with a concise answer, we would greatly appreciate it.

We wish you the best throughout this spring!
