What is your major?

I'm a Health Science major with a Feminist Studies minor.

What makes Stevenson different from the other colleges at UCSC?

Stevenson is centrally located and is host to many programs, events, and organizations that I find interesting. On any given day, you can walk around and find something fun to do.

The college advisers, staff, and faculty are incredibly helpful and personable, and really strive to help every student achieve their personal and academic goals. I think it's really neat that Stevenson offers scholarship and grant opportunities to its students.

How are Stevenson students different from other students at UCSC?

Stevenson students come from many diverse backgrounds and contribute their experiences to foster a community of fun and acceptance. They are creative, adventurous, talented, curious, and incredibly friendly. During my freshman year, I received invaluable advice and friendship from Stevenson upperclassmen.

Why did you choose Stevenson College? or, Why do you think prospective students might want to choose Stevenson?

Prospective students should choose Stevenson if they'd enjoy being in an environment where they'll always feel welcome and included. Freshman dorm life in Stevenson can be a great experience, especially with all the themed houses and evening Core lectures that every freshman attends.

Some of the things that stood out to me about Stevenson include the coffee shop, the cozy library, close proximity to the gym and bookstore, and the sunny, positive vibe exuded by staff and faculty.

What is the most important thing you learned in the Core Course at Stevenson College?

I really learned how to be a free thinker during Core Course. The texts and assignments really forced me to think critically about relevant issues in life, religion, philosophy, and ethics. I would often have contradicting thoughts during discussions, my mind was opened to new ways of thinking that made me question many things I'd accepted as objective truths.

What activities at Stevenson College or UCSC are you involved in? How did you get involved in this activity and what do you think you've gained from the experience?

I get to meet and greet many Stevenson students working at the Mail Room. I've also been involved in a few multicultural programs through the university, and am looking forward to getting involved with the Arboretum.

Taking dance classes through OPERS is the highlight of my week, it's nice to be able to take a break from studying and walk right down the hill to the gym.

Can you tell us about a particularly positive, memorable or special experience you've had with a Stevenson community member (faculty member, staff member, or student)?

During the first few weeks of my freshman year, I was awarded a Stevenson College scholarship and was invited to Provost Alice Yang's home for a reception. I met some amazing people and heard some really great stories, it was the first time I truly felt welcomed into the UCSC community.

If applicable, how has Stevenson challenged your expectations about college life?

UCSC is a really big school with a huge student body, living in Stevenson helps me to feel like more than just a needle in a haystack. I've been to the Advising Office many times and received guidance that I never imagined I'd be able to from such a large university.
