Staff & Faculty Statement: Presidential Results

November 13, 2016

Dear Stevenson Community,

In the wake of the election, many students, staff, and faculty are struggling with feelings of shock, sadness, anxiety, and anger. We also recognize that there are a wide variety of reactions across campus and hope everyone will continue to engage in conversations about what happens next without resorting to personal attacks. We are extremely proud, however, of the way our community has rallied to condemn the xenophobic, racist, misogynistic, isolationist and divisive rhetoric of the past campaign and to call for the protection of everyone’s rights in the challenging times that lie ahead. We’ve been inspired by the countless discussions we’ve heard in hallways, classes, community forums, and campus protests about ways we can support each other. We take heart in the fact that so many in our community are now even more committed to encouraging those battling despair, understanding diverse and opposing perspectives, becoming involved in politics, and fighting for social change. Stevensonians have a long tradition of activism and public service and it is clear that our current students will continue this legacy and become leaders who will not lose hope but view this past election as a catalyst for action and public engagement.

We encourage you to continue the open communication among students, staff and faculty. Please contact Provost Alice Yang or College Administrative Officer Carolyn Golz if you’d like to discuss these issues or become involved in planning future community forums. The Stevenson Student Council is meeting tonight at 7:30 PM in the Silverman Conference Room.
