Residential Life
Welcome to Stevenson College Residential Life!
The college experience isn’t only about what you learn in the classroom, but it’s also about the learning that goes on outside of the classroom. Residential Life is about the experiences you have in your residential houses with your roommates and hall mates, in your rooms and in the residential lounges and quads. Learning happens at the social, educational and multicultural programs that are specially designed for you by residential and programming staff and can just as easily happen over a cup of coffee in the Stevenson Coffee House with other students, staff or faculty.
Residential Life is a unique experience because you will have the opportunity to live with other students from different parts of this state, from other states as well as other countries. You’ll get to live in an environment which supports academic endeavors and at the same time provides new friendships and support that go a long way towards succeeding in the college environment. This is truly an exciting time in your life. We are happy to have you be part of our Stevenson community!
Many first-year students living on campus make two important discoveries. First, that most have more individual freedom than they previously experienced; and second, that the intense academic demands and confined residential living arrangement require greater self-control and individual discipline than ever before. To a significant extent, your success will depend on your ability to understand and balance these two aspects of undergraduate college life. The college staff does not assume the role of a parent and you will seldom be told what to do or what not to do with regard to your personal behavior. The obvious exception, as with society at large, is when individual behavior, whether regarding noise, drugs, tobacco or alcohol, begins to disrupt the legitimate pursuits of others within the residence areas, or threatens your own safety and well-being.
While your room is your own (and your roommates’), there are a number of common areas that you will share. Each house has a lounge you are generally free to use. The lounges serve as an informal setting for games, study breaks, movie nights, special programs, and house meetings. Each floor has a large central bathroom facility with private bathroom stalls, sinks, showers, and washer and dryer. Most bathrooms are designated coed but are modified for individual privacy.
Your roommate may or may not become your best friend, but will surely be remembered for many years to come, simply because of the experiences you will share. As a new student you will be assigned to a double, triple or quad room. You will receive information about your roommate(s) prior to your arrival. Your assignment is based on the Lifestyle Questionnaire that you will complete online along with your contract. It is in your best interest to take some time answering the questions as fully, thoughtfully and honestly as possible. We do our best to match you with someone who shares your interests, outlooks and lifestyle.
