Advising Resources
See one of the Academic Advisers for help with clarifying your goals, choosing classes, selecting a major, approving a courseload of less than 15 or more than 19 units, help with petitions, academic difficulty, or on-going general advising.
EOP COUNSELORS
EOP students (students from low-income backgrounds) have additional advising resources available at the EOP Office. An EOP Academic Counselor can be helpful with general advising if you find yourself in academic difficulty. They can also direct you to other resources such as the EOP Learning Center and programs such as the Academic Excellence (ACE) Program, the Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) Program, and the Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) Program, and the Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program.
CAREER CENTER COUNSELORS
The counselors at the Career Center are available to help you narrow your choices as you decide on a major and can offer help in assessing your career interests. The Career Center offers regular workshops, provides information on a wide range of internship opportunities, and maintains an extensive career resources library. Through the Alumni Career Advice Network (CAN), you can speak with UCSC graduates who are working in fields that interest you.
STEVENSON ACADEMIC ASSISTANTS
Academic Assistants provide peer advising and help with writing projects and assignments. (See schedule below.)
MAJOR DEPARTMENT ASSISTANTS
An undergraduate department advisor can inform you of major requirements as you are deciding on a major and, once you have declared your major, will help you with all your major advising as you complete your major requirements.
MAJOR FACULTY ADVISERS
When you declare your major, you will select a faculty adviser in your major area. Your faculty advisor can discuss your study plan, help clarify your path within your major, offer advice about the quality of graduate programs in your field, and provide mentorship in your field of interest.
HEALTH SCIENCE CAREER ADVISERS
Students pursuing a career in medicine or other health related fields can contact the Division of Natural Science’s Health Science Career Advising Office for help with their career goals.
COUNSELING RESOURCES
Counselors are available in the EAP Office to help you prepare for study abroad, in Re-Entry Services to help students over age 25 balance family and study responsibilities, in the Disability Resource Center to help students with disabilities, and in International Programs to help foreign students. If you live on campus, your residential preceptor and resident assistant are other counseling resources. For professional counseling, psychologists are available free of charge through Counseling & Psychological Services. Counseling & Psychological Services also offers a wide range of group counseling services as well as a stress reduction clinic.
Publications
The following publications will be instrumental to successful completion of your UCSC degree and enhancement of your university career:
THE NAVIGATOR
The Navigator is UCSC’s undergraduate guide to academic and student affairs and will prove invaluable as you progress toward your degree. In it you will find the "nuts and bolts" information you need about academic and administrative procedures, as well as campus services and opportunities. The navigator is no longer a printed publication. Please visit the Navigator website.
THE UCSC GENERAL CATALOG
The UCSC General Catalog is your definitive source for information about academic requirements, campus services and programs, research programs and facilities, and student life. But you will find yourself reaching for the general catalog mostly to read about the different majors offered at UCSC, look up major requirements, and read the official descriptions for courses you may wish to take. The course descriptions also tell you in which quarter(s) the course is offered and which general education requirements they satisfy. This will help you plan your schedule beyond the current quarter. The general catalog is not provided to you by the university; it must be purchased at the bookstore for $7.00. It is highly recommended that you purchase a UCSC General Catalog for the year you enter UCSC.
DEPARTMENT HANDBOOKS
Most major departments prepare handbooks outlining the scope of the major, detailed requirements for completing the major, and faculty profiles. After declaring your major, the major department will provide you with all advising related to your major. The department handbooks provide you the in-depth information that is not included in the general catalog.
SCHEDULES OF CLASSES
Around the sixth week of the quarter, class schedules for the upcoming quarter become available online. Shortly thereafter, printed copies are available in the college office. In addition to the course offerings for the quarter, the schedule provides you with complete information on enrollment including info on your appointment time, an academic calendar for the quarter including petition filing and enrollment deadlines, schedules for department orientations, department contact information, final exams, enrollment conditions for interview only courses, placement tests, schedule planners, and general information.
