Advising Newsletter
The Stevenson Advising Newsletter is
produced to keep you informed of important deadlines and to alert you
to programs and resources that may be of interest to you. We will try
to keep these newsletters as brief as possible and aim to send them
one week before important deadlines. We hope that you will find the
newsletter a useful tool to keep your quarter running smoothly. To
minimize time spent on e-mail, we recommend scanning the contents and
then deleting if nothing pertains to you. For your reference, the
newsletters are archived at:

DEADLINE TO REMOVE AN INCOMPLETE FROM
WINTER 2008: THURS, JUNE
12
If you received an Incomplete grade
notation in a Winter 2008 course, you will need to complete the work
for the course and file the validated "Petition for Removal of an
Incomplete" before Thursday, June 12. Complete procedures can be
found in The Navigator (http://reg.ucsc.edu/navigator/index.html -
click on Section 4 then scroll to pg. 60). If you do not complete the
work by the deadline, your Incomplete will lapse to a No Pass or an
"F" depending on which letter-grade option you selected. If
you will be graduating this year, it is especially important to make
sure you don’t end up with an unexpected "F" on your
record since it could prevent you from graduating.
* To request an Incomplete grade for
Spring quarter, you must make arrangements with the instructor before
the end of the quarter. At an instructor’s discretion, an I grade
notation may be assigned for work that is of passing quality but
incomplete.
* Not sure if you have an “I” grade? Check your winter grades on the portal!

SPRING GRADES AVAILABLE ON THE
PORTAL: WED, JUNE
18 / SPRING ACADEMIC
REVIEW
You will be able to check your spring grades on the Student Portal beginning Wednesday, June 18. We will be conducting our quarterly review of academic standing at the end of June. At the end of our academic review, we will notify all students who fall into Probation status, Subject to Disqualification status, or who are Barred or Disqualified from further enrollment at UCSC. Letters will be sent to the mailing address you have indicated on the Student Portal. You may update your mailing address on the Student Portal (https://my.ucsc.edu) by selecting the "Address" link under the "Personal Info & Options" menu item.

* If you anticipate a GPA below 2.0 after
spring quarter, you should see an adviser before the end of the
quarter to discuss possible actions after the academic review. If your
letter informs you of an academic standing committee decision to bar
your enrollment for fall, you will be given a deadline to appeal the
committee’s decision.
DEADLINE TO PETITION FOR A LEAVE OF
ABSENCE BEGINNING FALL 2008: FRI,
AUGUST 29
August 29 is the last day to petition to
take a leave of absence for Fall 2008. A leave of absence may be
for one to six quarters. You must be in good academic standing to
qualify for a leave of absence. While on an approved leave, you have
access to services at the Career Center, Off-Campus Housing, Family
Student Housing, and some computer labs. If you miss the deadline to
petition for a leave of absence, you will need to withdraw from the
university and then file a Readmission Application when you wish to
return. For more info, see The Navigator at
http://reg.ucsc.edu/navigator/chapter6.html#leave_absence.
GRADUATION INFORMATION
The Stevenson Commencement Ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 15 at 1:00 PM at the East Field. For information on the ceremony, see http://stevenson.ucsc.edu/community-life/commencement.html or contact the Stevenson College Programs Office at 459-3108. For those of you planning to finish all your graduation requirements at the end of spring quarter, here’s a little info on how the actual posting of your degree will proceed. Once you apply to graduate on the Student Portal, your major department can then begin checking to see if you have fulfilled all of your major/minor requirements. At the end of spring quarter, the Registrars Office will begin processing graduation files for all students who have satisfied all of their requirements for graduation. (See http://reg.ucsc.edu/catalog/html/undergrad_acad.htm#graduation.) Students who have not met these requirements will be denied candidacy for graduation. The Registrars Office will be continuing with graduation files throughout the summer and will confer degrees individually as they complete a file. Once all the degrees are conferred, the Registrars Office will order the diplomas. Diplomas for spring graduates are usually received 2-3 months after the quarter ends. If you have a need to show someone that you have officially graduated, you should order a transcript and indicate that you would like a “degree hold” on the transcript. For more information, contact the Registrars Office.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Ever heard of Google? So have your instructors! It is common for an instructor to google passages from student papers that seems inconsistent with their previous work. Are you informed about what constitutes plagiarism? Do you know the consequences of cheating? Issues of academic dishonesty are taken very seriously at UCSC. Possible sanctions include suspension and dismissal from the university. See the Info Ethics pages of UCSC’s Information Literacy Tutorials for an informative look at plagiarism and citations (http://nettrail.ucsc.edu/ethics/plagiarism.html) and the policy on Academic Dishonesty in the Navigator ( http://reg.ucsc.edu/navigator/appendix.html#policy) for more info.
